Last weekend we spent a pleasant day touring parts of the Utrecht and North Holland provinces, along the scenic river Vecht, and stopped in the small town of Naarden.
The town is surrounded by a unique star-shaped moat. Below are some pics from one area of the fortifications; for an aerial view click here.
Naarden is a pleasant little town that happens to have two of the nicest wine shops we've found here ... so we left with the wallet a little lighter.
So, who's the dude? Comenius (Jan Amos Komensky), a Czech-born educator/writer who is known as the father of modern education and after whom a prestigious United Nations education award is named. He spent his last years in The Netherlands escaping religious persecution.

My village, where I live ( over the bridge, not inside de "vesting" )and ? did you like it? You made the 'roundtrip' saw ,haha:) and you found the 2 excellent wine-shops , yes its good to know/visit them, and "Comenius ,
Well I would advice you to come back, once the spring/summer is starting, all looks different-prettier, more coloured than you might also like to make a 'canal-boat-trip'.
But you did a good job by photographing the most interesting parts, did you visit also 1 of the restaurants? There are over a 15 different 'great cuisine' restaurants here in Naarden, and not te forget the 'antique shops', the designers (inside there are shops) " the Arsenaal" by Dutch designer Jan des Bouvrie.. .
Well I hope you enjoyed your roundtrip, I also lived for 12 yesr in utrecht....

hmm so the Netherlands was a safe haven from religious persecution? Very interesting and I like these scenes you've put up--so peaceful and serene...

Long time I have not been to Naarden, but I'm actually going there to visit friends next Saturday. I never miss the Arsenaal from Jan des Bouvrie, as the building itself is sooo nice. By the way, if you look for a good wine shop in The Hague, my favourite is Le Bouchon in Valeriusstraat (open from Thursday to Sunday): great choice of wines (and not only French) and very nice guy.
