Hidden Worker

A neat little statue, almost hidden for wanderers to discover, along the Stadhouderskade in Amsterdam.

Antwerp Garden Art

A quick weekend trip to Belgium took us to Antwerp, Diest, and Tongeren. In Antwerp we came across a small garden ("Kruidtuin" or herb garden). Dating from the early 1800s, it is an interesting little oasis and it was nice to see some of the early spring plants blooming. It's not a dainty recreation of an 1800's garden, as this modern sculpture shows.

Be Constructive

This would have been a good "what is it" photo, had I thought to take a full-frame picture to reveal it's full structure. So I'll just tell you that it is detail from the Naum Gabo sculpture "Constructie" (Construction) in Rotterdam.

Your interpretation's as good as mine...

Münsterland Sphinx -- Where?Wednesday

A much different sculpture from yesterday's post. This is from the sculpture garden of the Schloss Nordkirchen, also known as the "Versailles of Westphalia."


We've jumped over the German border again, into the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen.


This sphinx is enjoying the fall colors, as we hope you do while we travel some more. See you back here next Tuesday.

Surreal Scheveningen

This beach sculpture probably isn't technically surreal art, but that's how I'd describe it.

I believe it's a permanent exhibit from the sculpture on the sea museum.

For some reason, it seems to show best on cloudy, moody days.

Yeah Yeah Yeah

I don't know what it was about this installation of Den Haag Sculptur that caught my eye. I have to say I didn't notice it on our previous visits to this area of The Hague. Perhaps it was the bright colors on a sunny day.

In any event, I found some information on the artist, Jon Campbell, from a previous exhibition in New Zealand. From the website, "The yeah flag, literally a flag emblazoned with the word ‘yeah’ in hot pink, was championed by A Constructed World through an online petition to be the new Australian flag. " I wonder what the Aussies think of this...

Not-so-good-Knight

Back to The Hague for the third (& final) Alexander Taratynov sculptures in The Hague. This one is based on Duerer's Knight, Death, and the Devil.

Blind Leading the Blind

Recently we came across another sculpture exhibit in The Hague. There are three statues by Alexander Taratynov; they're all based on famous paintings. This one is based on Brueghel's Parable of the Blind ... click the link if you want to compare it to the original. Check back over the next couple of days to see the other sculptures.

Mama Moped

This piece really made us laugh ... another work from Den Haag Sculptur. It is enclosed in glass and so it was very difficult to get a good angle, so here's another perspective.

Planet of the Apes?

Each year, Den Haag Sculptur (The Hague Sculpture) exhibits a number of public art works. A couple of the sculptures really caught our attention.

This is White Ape by Lisa Roet. It's big; you're seeing it from my eye level (and I'm 6'2").

Public art

There's a lot of public art around town. This statue graces the beginning of the Langstraat, Wassenaar's main shopping street.

Museum Mauritshuis

The Mauritshuis art museum in the center of The Hague is a real gem. Primarily focused on Dutch/Flemish artists (it is owned by the government), it has a number of famous paintings, two of which are previewed here: Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson.
