This is one of the windmills at the Kinderdijk (see this recent post from The Hague). We hadn't published this photo before, but we use it for our blogger profile pic.

Thinking of ... Windmills

Windmills (molen) are of course a typical image when you think of The Netherlands. The windmill in Wassenaar, the Windlust, sits just off the town center. It still mills flour, and is open on Saturdays for tours. A regular feature on this blog, it probably isn't the first thing people think of about Wassenaar, but to us it's a great landmark and defining feature of the town.

Molen Morning

A rare break in the clouds ... this morning we had a very colorful sunrise. The view from our top floor made for a nice shot of the Wassenaar "Windlust" windmill ("molen") silhouetted against the sky. It's cloudy again already, with wind and rain forecasted for the weekend.

Blue Mill: November "Color Blue" Theme Day

It's a pleasure to be able to look out our front windows and see Wassenaar's 300 year old windmill (molen), the Windlust.

Here it is in the early morning, when the sky is just starting to turn blue.

This candidate for July theme day would have been another "what's red about it?" post. If you look closely (or click the photo for a larger version) you can see a banner stretched across the windmill. Last week was collection week for the Netherlands Red Cross.

We've supported the Red Cross ever since our apartment building in suburban Chicago burned down 16 years ago. They immediately set up shop and helped the displaced residents with food and temporary living accomodations. They provide an invaluable service to people who suffer in disasters big and small.

And it's always good to have an excuse to take another photo of our Wassenaar windmill "Windlust."

From our window...

One of the reasons we chose our house in Wassenaar was the view onto the Molenplein (roughly translated: windmill square). In this composite photo, you can see the Windlust windmill to the left. In the center of the plein are two large trees (in spring the ground is filled with daffodils; in late spring the trees flower). Right in front of our window is a large tree, from which we can hear the blackbirds and chickadees.

This collage is my first attempt at a "photomerge" ... you can probably tell that I am a photoshop novice. I probably should have adjusted the exposure of each image so that they made a cleaner composite, but I kind of like the "prism" effect and decided to keep it as is.
