This swan (zwaan) looked striking in this very green Wassenaar canal. He (she?) was followed by a group of juvenile swans making an incredible racket as they sifted through the algae for food ... it sounded like a whole group of fountains bubbling at the same time.

Swans are lovely and they seem fit for that green algae covered canal. I don't think I have seen something that green since fake grass was put down on our football fields. Beautiful birds.

So it looks like they are swimming on grass, same as here in 'het Gooi' (area of couple of towns in the middle of Holland) Did you know that swaens are always in couples of two (female/male)? They ( the same)are returning every year at the same spot.
I know because we live here for 8 years, and every year the same couples of swaens return on the same spot.

Then they must mate for life...like geese. What a lovely picture...they wouldn't have to compete with me in that water!
Thanks to Mike & JoAnn ... now we know that the green stuff is duckweed and that swans mate for life!
