Mirror, Mirror in Amsterdam: Where?Wednesday

I shot this because of the different elements -- the "bunny" plaque, the reflection in the window -- but ultimately didn't think it was a very interesting photo.

Then I noticed the element that seems very out of place.

I mean, what is up with that mirror? It looks like someone ripped it off a truck and stuck it next to a window.

What possible function can it serve? To spy on a neighbor, to get a view when sitting at a desk? If anyone can enlighten me please do.

Somebody once told me that with that mirror one could see who is ringing on the front door; that was before the time of the video-intercom! In Amsterdam though, many houses still only have a small bell on the front door, then with this stratagem, you see who is ringing, and then you can throw the keys through the window....

yes, agreed with lezard but also to spy on the neighbours. They are even called "spionnetjes"

Seems like the see who's at the front door is a logical explanation. Also you don't have to open it, if you don't like who you see.

Mirrors like that were very popular some decades ago in Sweden and Finland. For instance you may see a lot of them in the small village of Barseback near the see in Southern Sweden.

Lezard and Ineke, thanks for the explanations. Steve, I almost thought Ineke was doing an early April Fool, but indeed "spionnetjes" is the correct term for spy mirrors! Deslilas, maybe the Swedes and Finns share the practicality gene with the Dutch!

Seems like your answer arrived timely. That would be my guess too. Take a look sometime at the way the buildings angle outward as they go upward, I think this is the same basic idea:to be able to gaze out an upper window and see who is down at the door without having to lean over a window ledge to get the information.
